Breast reconstruction: own tissue or implant?
Reconstruction with your own tissue or an implant; which is suitable is decided individually.

Breast reconstruction can be done with the patient's own tissue (autologous reconstruction) or with an implant and tissue expander.
In reconstruction with your own tissue, tissue from the abdomen, back, inner thigh and buttock areas is used. Implant reconstruction is preferred by patients who have no suitable tissue of their own or do not want surgery on the back or abdomen.
For patients who have had or are likely to have radiotherapy to the chest wall, reconstruction with an implant alone is not a good option.
For more details, see the Implant Reconstruction page.
