Autologous Reconstruction

Autologous Reconstruction

Breast reconstruction surgery performed only with the patient’s own tissue is called autologous reconstruction. The patient’s own tissue used in breast reconstruction is mainly taken from the abdomen, back, inner thigh and buttock areas.

The most commonly used in autologous reconstruction are the TRAM flap and DIEP flap from the abdominal area, the latissimus dorsi flap from the back, the TUG flap from the thigh, the gluteal flaps from the buttock, and the Ruben flap method from the flank.

Types of Autologous Reconstruction of the Breast

  1. Made from abdominal tissue
  2. Made from the buttock region
  3. Made from back tissue
  4. Made from the inner thigh region

Breast Reconstruction with Abdominal Tissue

These are flap operations performed with preservation of the original blood vessels in those who have enough tissue to form a breast.

In patients with little abdominal tissue, a breast implant can also be applied together with it. It requires microsurgery.

Breast Reconstruction from the Buttock Region

In women who do not want a scar on the abdominal tissue or whose tissue is not sufficient, the fat and skin tissue over a part of the buttock muscle is used for breast reconstruction. It requires microsurgery.

Breast Reconstruction with Back Tissue

It gives a good result when used together with a breast implant. It does not require microsurgery. Its circulation is quite good.

Frequently asked questions

Your questions, answered.

The most common questions about Autologous Reconstruction, with short answers.

What is autologous breast reconstruction?

It is breast repair surgery done only with the patient's own tissue. The tissue used is taken mainly from the abdomen, back, inner thigh and buttock areas.

Which methods are used in autologous reconstruction?

The most used are the TRAM and DIEP flaps from the abdomen, the latissimus dorsi flap from the back, the TUG flap from the thigh, gluteal flaps from the buttock and the Ruben flap from the flank.

How is breast reconstruction with abdominal tissue done?

In those with enough tissue to form a breast, these are flap operations performed while preserving the original blood vessels. In patients with little abdominal tissue a breast implant can also be added, and microsurgery is needed.

Which area is used if abdominal tissue is not enough?

In women who do not want a scar on the abdomen or whose tissue is not enough, the fat and skin over part of the buttock muscle can be used; this also needs microsurgery.

What is breast reconstruction with back tissue like?

Back tissue gives a good result when used with a breast implant. It does not need microsurgery and its circulation is very good.

Does autologous reconstruction need microsurgery?

Reconstructions from the abdomen and buttock need microsurgery; reconstruction with back tissue does not.

What is the difference between autologous and implant reconstruction?

In autologous reconstruction only the patient's own tissue is used; in implant reconstruction a silicone prosthesis or tissue expander is used. See the implant reconstruction page for details.
